All you have to do is knit garter stitch, with a brief section of very easy short rows at the top of the front pieces. No edge trim is required because of the neat appearance of garter stitch. And the small buttons can go right through the fabric, so you can forget about having to make buttonholes. (Optional trim and buttonhole instructions are included though, in case you want to do them.)

The brown version below is made in Cascade 220 Superwash.
